It’s hard to believe the awe-inspiring propping, color, light and overall technique of the opening sequence of this stunning Australian work by Gillian Armstrong with cinematography by Donald McAlpine and Art Direction by Neil Angwin is nearly thirty years old. Armstrong’s Australian outback locations are like a tactile, modern dustbowl – devoid of all finery and creativity for poor Sybylla, her ambitious heroine, deftly played by a strikingly young Judy Davis. This film is just one more of the many nuanced and beautiful examples of why we are ever wowed by the Aussie sensibility! Definitely worth dusting off and watching again – available on Netflix instant watch.
