The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

© Pathé Renn Productions, 2007

Julian Schnabel’s achingly beautiful portrayal of the true story of French Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby who is left nearly completely paralyzed by a stroke with his mind perfectly intact. The heights to which Bauby’s imagination and creativity soar from within his seemingly underwater prison are so amazing and inspiring. And the fact that Julian Schnabel’s story and imagery is so soft, tactile, beautifully composed and stunning makes this film much less of a tear-jerker than it could have been. Definitely worth a first and second viewing.
